Nancy Kondos
Nancy Kondos grew up in Albany, GA, on country red dirt roads. Nothing fancy about her home, and she wore a lot of homemade clothes.
The best thing that happened to her then was growing up with dogs that were her best friends. Shag, Rag, and Lulu made a great pack that greatly flavored Nancy’s summers of hot, humid days.
The dogs’ worst nightmares were getting fleas bitten to the hilt in Albany’s bitter heat. Back in the 1960s, there were no pills to give the dogs to kill those awful miniature beasts. Nancy bathed them often in a black rubber tub in the yard. She afterwards doused them with flea powder, which did nothing to cure the curse.
Shag, Rag, and Lulu were Nancy’s biggest charms. They liked to chase rocks she threw, skidding around the dirt yard. They would relax afterwards under a favorite old oak tree and lick their favorite chosen stones till they glistened with spit.
Nancy graduated from Westover High School in 1970. That’s the year she left Albany directly after graduating to go work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. Being proficient in shorthand and typing bought her a ticket to earn an entry-level job as a stenographer staffed in a steno pool. Nancy had a solid federal government career for over 26 1/2 years, working in various jobs.
Nancy is an artist of mini things that matter, and Corgis certainly matter. She draws more with her heart than with her hands.
She especially likes to draw Pembroke Welsh Corgis because she lived with two of them for approximately 28 consecutive years, as each Corgi lived to be 14 years old. Mr. Byron and South-8 were their names.
The first time she saw
Mr. Byron at the Annandale VA animal shelter, she didn’t know what he was. He seemed mixed up in proportions, and he had an overbite with a slow drool.
Nancy soon came to know she had adopted a dream dog because neighbors enlightened her about their heritage. They are a herding breed descending from the moors and pastures of England.
Both of Nancy’s Corgis were loud, diligent QUACKERS like irritable, gabby ducks getting off a crowded tour bus.
These days Nancy lives with Carni, a Corgi Red, and Bosco, a Corgi Tri-Color. And they too are smitten with quack attacks.
So “QUACK Goes the Corgi” stuck in her head until Nancy finally put her Corgi characters in a book with their fun friends, bunnies and sheep.
I like to wear vintage hats and let my two Corgi boys pick them out. It’s a highlight of their day to see my outfitted head bobbing about. Carnival Jester Cedric is our divine Red Pembroke Welsh Corgi and he favors wearing them. Now that’s too silly to even write about. Bosco Barnaby Bean, our Tri-Color PWC, scares easily when my hat flies off and hits his knees. Do Corgis have knees? Now that’s worth thinking about. So I’d rather write about Carni and Bosco than focus on 72-year-old me.
